The core of selecting RP (ordinary power), HP (high power), and UHP (ultra-high power) graphite electrodes lies in matching the power level of the electric arc furnace, the steelmaking process, and production efficiency. These three types of electrodes have significant differences in raw materials, processes, and performance, and their applicable scenarios vary. First, determine the power requirement of the electric arc furnace. Ordinary power electric arc furnaces (power ≤ 30t) can use RP graphite electrodes, which are made from ordinary petroleum coke and have a simple production process and low cost, meeting the needs of conventional steelmaking and smelting, and suitable for small and medium-sized steel mills and general smelting scenarios. Secondly, high-power electric arc furnaces (30 - 100t) need to use HP graphite electrodes, which are made from high-quality petroleum coke and undergo high-temperature graphitization treatment, with low resistivity, good thermal conductivity, and high mechanical strength, capable of withstanding high current loads, improving steelmaking efficiency, and reducing electrode wear, suitable for medium-sized steel mills and high-strength smelting scenarios. For ultra-high power electric arc furnaces (≥ 100t), UHP graphite electrodes need to be selected, which are made from needle coke as the core raw material, after precise processing and special treatment, with extremely low resistivity, excellent thermal shock resistance, and high mechanical strength, capable of withstanding extremely large current loads, with very low electrode wear rate, suitable for large steel mills and high-end special steel smelting, significantly improving production efficiency and product quality. Additionally, when selecting, attention should be paid to the diameter and length of the electrode, matching the appropriate size according to the specifications of the electric arc furnace to avoid using incompatible sizes that may cause usage failures. At the same time, verify the key indicators such as the volume density, resistivity, and flexural strength of the electrode, and preferentially choose products with complete test reports to ensure stable electrode performance. When purchasing, consider cost and performance, for ordinary scenarios, there is no need to blindly select UHP electrodes to avoid excessive costs; for high-end smelting scenarios, priority should be given to performance, choosing HP or UHP electrodes that are suitable for the application, to enhance production efficiency.
